When medical imaging revolutionizes railway engineering

Innovation knows no limits, and this time, it is medical imaging that inspires railway engineering. SNCF Voyageurs Materiel, in collaboration with its partner laboratory AEF, has developed AQUASCAN, a cutting-edge technology intended to modernize the control of the internal health of train wheels.

A solution inspired by medical ultrasound

Designed by Bastien Richard and his team of non-destructive testing (NDT) experts, this technology uses ultrasound to detect and prevent fatigue cracking that could appear in the wheels. Just as an ultrasound allows you to visualize the inside of the human body, AQUASCAN offers a clear view of the inside of the wheels, thus ensuring predictive maintenance and increased safety.
